For the 30th celebration of the KKNK, the aim is to create a visual arts programme that honours historical aspects of the Klein Karoo yet reaches out to the world and into the future.

PLACE is the main festival exhibition and consists of new works by each of the previous festival artists, as well as work by two previous festival curators from 1996 to today. The fact that an exhibition that brings together artists of such magnitude can manifest in this place (the Klein Karoo), is a small miracle and an exceptional way to celebrate the 30th festival!

nomThunzi Mashalaba’s interdisciplinary practice revolves around her personal story. The aesthetics of the book page and the language of the drawn line consistently serve as the foundation of her work.

In this exhibition, he turns his attention to the landscapes of popular Dutch South African artist Tinus de Jongh (1885 - 1942) which, as he observes, are “emblematic of that whole genre of kitschy landscape painting that I grew up with, and to which generations of Afrikaners are so attached.”

Being Here for You is an exchange across distance which began in 2020, by Dutch artist Rita Hoofwijk and South African artist Hannah Loewenthal.

An artistic conversation between South African painter, Wonder Marthinus, and two female artists, Cendres Delort (France) and Sonia Martins Mateus (France and Portugal).

Each year an emerging artist is invited to spend time in Oudtshoorn and explore the local history and landscape to create a body of work that is in dialogue with the space. Luxolo Witvoet, from Cape Town, is the selected artist for this year.

A multi-speaker audio installation with digital voices and electronics. This project consists of two distinct parts: the immersive audio instrument and the auditory work itself exploiting the shared immersive nature of the instrument.

How does the light play on the objects we observe and where are the shadows? Where do we take place within reality? Where do we start when we try to understand the world?

Passage – a song. brings together Berlin-based artists Akinbode Akinbiyi (Nigeria) and Abrie Fourie (South Africa) in a reflective dialogue on place, memory, and attentive listening. The project was initiated in December 2021 during their residency at Operndorf Afrika – the Opera Village envisioned by Christoph Schlingensief and designed by Francis Kéré, near Ziniaré, Burkina Faso.

Curators Juria le Roux and Brahm van Zyl invite established landscape painters to a conversation with the Karoo. The visual is employed as language… becomes language.

The project explores the displacement of humans, animals, and water entities that often move without borders yet are continuously confined, redirected or commodified by them.
