A multi-speaker audio installation with digital voices and electronics. This project consists of two distinct parts: the immersive audio instrument and the auditory work itself exploiting the shared immersive nature of the instrument.

The text is a translation in the 11 official audible South African languages of a short excerpt from the Latin poem Metamorphoses by Publius Ovidius Naso. The excerpt is from Book 15, lines 199 to 213 of the poem and compares the four seasons to the stages of the human lifespan.

The audio in total consists of 66 separate feeds each routed to a single speaker. However, not all 66 speakers are constantly active throughout the work.

Die werk is ’n viering van die diversiteit en kulturele rykdom van die mensdom, soos vergestalt deur die Suid-Afrikaanse tale. Te veel stemme probeer mense uitmekaar dryf – ons vier nie meer ons krag deur diversiteit in die land nie – indien nie die wêreld nie. En tog … diversiteit is wat spesies, kulture, stelsels toelaat om te oorleef, aan te pas en te floreer: Die werk is ’n viering van diversiteit.

Along with the celebration of diversity, the work also explores the concept of disruption: chances (aleatoricism plays a role in the process too) are that almost no listeners are familiar with all the languages, nor the text used – and the limitations of the digital voices (coupled with the use of their extended vocal ranges) disrupt even the languages the auditor could be familiar with.
