Die Karoo Kunslied explores how poetry, landscapes and music coalesce in the Afrikaans art song. With music of early composers such as S. le Roux Marais and Pieter de Villiers to more contemporary masters such as Franco Prinsloo, the South African landscape is captured in sound. The programme ranges from classical settings by Leipoldt and Boerneef to traditional sing-alongs from the 1970s, with works such as “Toemaar die donker man” and “Kinders van die wind”. The Karoo serves as an emotional and symbolic core for a sound journey through longing, identity and connection.
