A dramatic journey through the inner world of one of South Africa's most complex and tragic literary figures. This cabaret is set against the backdrop of a turbulent period in Afrikaner and South African history. Marais, an unlikely Afrikaner hero, does not fit neatly into the box of the traditional icon – and therein lies his significance. The piece follows Eugène’s metamorphosis from a charming young journalist and a charismatic student who rubbed shoulders with Chamberlain in London, to the worn-out, shy man of his later years.
