The fact that an exhibition that brings together artists of such magnitude can manifest in this place (the Klein Karoo), is a small miracle and an exceptional way to celebrate the 30th festival! Housed in the historic Prince Vintcent building, the exhibition stretches across various exhibition spaces and two floors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDie situasie was soos volg: Die doel van die teken was om \u2019n plek te merk, maar terselfdertyd het dit beteken dat daar in daardie plek dus \u2019n teken was (iets by verre meer belangrik, want daar was verskeie plekke, maar daar was net een teken) en ook, tegelykertyd was die teken myne, \u2019n teken van my, want dit was die enigste teken wat ek ooit gemaak het en ek was die enigste een wat al ooit tekens gemaak het &#8230; Meegevoer deur die kante van die sterrestelsel, het ons w\u00eareld koers gehou deur verafgele\u00eb ruimtes en die teken het gebly waar ek dit gelaat het om die plek te merk, en op dieselfde tyd het dit my gemerk, dit het my bewoon &#8230;\u201d \u2013 Italo Calvino, <em>The Complete Cosmicomics<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place can refer to a specific location in the world, for instance Oudtshoorn: A landmark with physical attributes and measurable spatial dimensions but at the same time, it could be a place holder. It holds space - for cultural, geographic and social contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Place and identity are deeply intertwined and refer to how people see themselves in relation to the environment. Thus, a mere location becomes a place through lived experiences and memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Space and place are connected, but if \u201cspace\u201d could be defined as the \u201cwhat and where\u201d, \u201cplace\u201d might be articulated as the \u201chow and why\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Place is how we attach meaning to location.<\/strong> Soms kan die spanning tussen \u2019n psigologiese sin van plek en die konkrete aspekte van \u2019n fisieke plek teenstrydighede op geografiese, emosionele, kulturele, sosiale, psigologiese, filosofiese of virtuele vlakke tot gevolg h\u00ea, maar meer dikwels is heelwat van hierdie teenstrydighede gelyktydig teenwoordig.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><em>PLACE<\/em> is the main festival exhibition and consists of new works by each of the previous festival artists, as well as work by two previous festival curators from 1996 to today.
