Albert Pretorius tears to shreds the fabric of a terrifyingly ordinary life, drawing from a failed marriage in the outer reaches of Germany and the privileged mess of middle-class South Africa. This It is a story about parenthood and the search for belonging and making sense, wrapped in the flame coat of verse and bewildering music, woven around a selection from Danie Marais’s four poetry collections. It is rock theatre, directed by the versatile Nico Scheepers, about a past that strangles the present and a white guy who, with his daughter and a progressive world, wants only one thing for Christmas: “To no longer always have to know how a middle-aged white man feels about everything.”
