The award-winning journalist and TV director Chris du Plessis recently got back on his music saddle with melodious versions of Afrikaans verses from the previous two centuries, “rather than the settings of the sexy sixties that are so often served up”. The accompanying tunes consist of traditional Celtic folk ballads and Zulu street guitar music to bluegrass and rock ’n roll. Between songs, he talks and jokes about the poets and the periods and circumstances in which they worked. Asked how he would sum up the show in one sentence: “It’s a lot funnier than the title suggests.”
